Totally unprepared

Sunday was the City Champs trials Magic:The Gathering tournament at Galeria. I came armed with my old Doran-powered deck (tweaked at the last possible moment), and a little prayer.

I was praying because the night before, I did some playtest, but not with that deck, but with another deck, in another format: vintage. I was praying because the most playtesting I've had was against my friend Chris' Elves deck.

So I came into the tournament praying that my Doran-powered world's champ decklist alone would be enough to give me a couple of wins. But that didn't happen.

I arrived at the tournament scene late, but managed to find a willing opponent. Amongst the sea of men, I was paired with a lady. Nice.

That innocent look on her face proved to be a distraction when I committed my first blunder of the day which led to my defeat on game 1. Hmm, I cannot lose to a girl, damnit. Game 2 was better as I hammered Doran into her ranks, defied her army of faeries until I gained the upper hand and won game 2. Game 3 was a battle of attrition which I seemed to be winning, until she topdecked a game-winning flashfreeze to stop my cloudthresher from wiping her side of the board.

That first game loss opened the floodgates for record-breaking losses in a single day.

A lot of players were playing decks that I've only seen on the Internet. Theoretically, I know how these decks work, and how to strategize against them. But theory is one thing, actual experience gained from playtesting is another.

Well, sh*t happens.
