It's probably too early for an Xmas wishlist, but looking at several PC based home entertainment systems made me wish it's christmas already *droool*.
After the recent M:tG Grand Prix, I've decided to lay low from the tournament scene for a while and to take up other hobbies. This is one project that I'm pretty excited about.
Overview
A home entertainment system typically consists of a big TV screen (at least 27" in), at least 4 speakers, dvd players, and an optional dvr. (http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/home-theater.htm)
Now, instead of a DVD player, I'll use a modded PC with a media center OS, dvd drive, a big capacity hard drive for pvr, excellent graphics card for video and games, tv tuner and hd-audio.
I've started a similar project a month ago, but that involved an Eee PC acting as a mobile multimedia box. This time, I wanted a dedicated PC-based multimedia box. There are several similar boxes in the market. This site shows several models from different brands. The one that stands out for me is the ASUS DAV. That would be a good reference.
This is my initial list:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Board: Asus / Gigabyte
RAM: 2 GB DDR2
Video: GF9600GT 512 DDR3
TV-Tuner: Winfast PVR3000 Deluxe
Audio: 7.1 Ch
HDD: 500 GB Sata
DVDRW: LiteOn 20X Sata
Speakers: Creative Inspire T7900
Also, considering different mounts, cable extensions, shelves, power outlets, etc.
I'll update this project blog from time to time to show progress, lesson's learned and tips that I might pick-up along the way.
