The IPhone 3G that I almost had

Globe called me up last Friday regarding an interesting offer. First, a bill discount of 900 pesos for the next 24 months, or a spanking new 8gb iPhone 3G for an additional payment of 16,000 (or 12 equal monthly installment of 1,334) on top of my regular monthly phone bill.

It was a really, really enticing offer. Had I give in to the impulsive side of me, I would have probably gotten that sweet new phone. After a lengthy discussion with Gid, we finally settled on the bill discount (despite the 1k subsidy that my mom-in-law was very willingly pitching in, how sweet!)

Do I really need a new phone? A new bling? Or is Globe's marketing really good that they have created 'false needs'? Before the call, I was already satisfied with my two other 3G phones. Not sexy, bling phones but rather awesome utility phones (N6233, and SEK530i).

I realized that after a month or so, the iPhone awesomeness may have been diluted by that time. I like new gadgets, but most of the time, I just like them when it's new. Despite the bling, the iPhone doesn't really have anything new to offer. Mp3 player? A pocket web browser? Multimedia player? My Palm TX can already do all that and more.

At the end of the day, the 900 bill discount for 24 months means that I can get to use my phone for free for 2 years.

I just wish I don't feel as bitter as I do while writing this blog :P Haaay, iPhone....
