When our lightning arrested was struck by lightning way back 2005, the damage was less. There were blown fuse and all, several shocked network switches, but that was that.
This time around, the damage was almost catastrophic. Our age old server was burnt to crisp. Piles of network switches became bulky paper weights. Suddenly, we were back to the stone age (ok, not really, but without a working network, we had to resort to 'sneaker'-net).
Nobody listened when I said we should overhaul the network cabling to include proper grounding. You see, our office building was not really equipped for such 'tech'. There were no earth busbars. Even the termination points were scattered. Magastos raw kasi magredesign, magreterminate at magrecable.
The whole PABX system took a hit as well. Like the data network, the telecom housewiring has little protection against lightning surges. There were also no grounding system installed at the main cabinet.
This time, avoiding a strike three (and yeeerr out!!), we decided to have the PABX system re-wired in a spankin new telecom room (and with ample protection). Also, talks of putting the whole building in a wireless network infrastructure made me feel a little giddy.. especially if you partner that with a new quad core xeon server running on windows server 2008..
Look ma, lightning brought us a new server!
