How to use your Nokia's 3G modem without using PC Suite

During last weekend's stay in a pool house in Laguna, the ability to go online on a whim proved very useful. If you're using an Eee PC, I'd like to share to you a way to go online without the need to install the memory and space-hog PC Suite.

1. Have your phone configured for 3G net access. (for Globe, go to this site: http://portal.myglobe.com.ph/portal/Suboverview.do?aid=1867435&id=1724)

2. Get a USB cable for your phone (DKU-x, DKE-x, CA-x).

3. Download and install the cable driver (http://www.nokia.com.ph/A4532417 4MB)

4. Connect your phone to your PC via USB. Your phone's modem will be automatically detected and installed.

5. Create a new dial-up connection. Right-click My Network Places, go to properties. Select Create a new connection.

6. Select Connect to the Internet. Click Next and select Set up my connection manually. Click Next.

7. Select Connect using a dial-up modem. Enter "3G" in ISP name, click next.

8. Enter "*99#" in the Phone number, click next.

9. Select Anyone's use, click next. Enter username "globe" and password "globe", click next, and finish.

10. Make sure you've switch to Globe's new TIME billing (Text TIME to 1111) so you won't get charged per kb. Also, ensure you are on a DUAL/UMTS mode for full 3G access.

Have fun surfing!
